HVAC fall heating checklist for homeowners

As autumn approaches, it's a great time for homeowners to prepare their HVAC system for the cooler weather and ensure efficient and reliable heating throughout the fall and winter. Here's a DIY fall heating checklist for homeowners:

Essential Checks and Maintenance:

  1. Replace or Clean Air Filters: A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your HVAC system to work harder, which can lead to higher energy bills and potentially damage components. A good air filter traps dust, allergens, and other airborne debris, protecting your system and improving indoor air quality. Replace or clean the filters at the start of each season, or more frequently if you have pets, allergies, or notice excessive dust.

  2. Inspect and Clean Air Vents and Registers: Dust and debris can accumulate in vents over time, blocking airflow and causing uneven heating. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean them, and ensure furniture or other items aren't obstructing airflow.

  3. Test the Thermostat: Check if your thermostat is accurately controlling the temperature and if the system responds correctly when you adjust the settings. Consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat to optimize energy usage and potentially save on heating costs.

  4. Seal Air Leaks: Inspect your home for drafts around windows and doors. Seal any gaps or leaks with weatherstripping or caulk to prevent heat loss and improve energy efficiency.

  5. Clean Around the Furnace/Outdoor Unit: Remove any dust, dirt, or debris that may have accumulated around your furnace or outdoor unit over the summer. This ensures proper airflow and helps prevent fire hazards. For outdoor units, clear away leaves, branches, or any other obstructions.

  6. Test Your Heating System: Before the colder weather arrives, turn on your furnace and let it run for a few minutes. This allows you to check for proper functioning, listen for unusual noises, and detect any strange smells that might indicate a problem.

Safety Precautions:

  1. Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure your carbon monoxide detectors are functioning correctly, especially if you have a gas furnace. Change the batteries annually and test the detectors regularly.

  2. Ensure Proper Ventilation: If you have a gas-powered furnace, confirm that the flue pipe is unobstructed to allow toxic gases like carbon monoxide to escape safely.

Optional or Professional Tasks:

  1. Inspect and Clean Ductwork: Check accessible sections of your ductwork for leaks, damage, dust, mold, or debris. Consider professional duct cleaning if there's significant buildup or if it's been several years since the last cleaning.

  2. Schedule Professional HVAC Maintenance: A professional HVAC technician can perform a thorough inspection and tune-up, identifying and addressing any potential issues before they become major problems. They can also ensure proper lubrication of moving parts, check electrical connections, and inspect crucial components like the heat exchanger. Some manufacturers require annual preventative maintenance to maintain the unit's warranty.

By performing these checks and scheduling professional maintenance as needed, you can help ensure your HVAC system is ready for the fall and winter, providing reliable heating, improved energy efficiency, and a comfortable indoor environment for your family.
